Truthfully, despite the giant billboards and occasional mentions in the various media, I haven't really been paying attention to the new
Astro Boy adaptation.
I'm not sure why that is. I have a feeling that they just didn't hit the visual design triggers that I use to categorize something as anime. It's that smoothly gradiented CG look, and, even though I like the occasional Western CG film, it's not the same mental bucket that I use for anime.
Which is unfortunate, because it might be causing the movie to miss its target audience. A
recent LA Times article really plays up the glorious history of the franchise, and that certainly intrigues me. The director seems to be saying all the right things. Balanced against that, the reviews seem mixed.
So yeah. I don't know. I'll probably watch it on TV one of these days. Until then, it's another reminder that visual design is important.
