I commented, before I'd seen the second of the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, that it was like a more grown-up version of the TV series. A little more measured, a bit more subtle. And I still believe that, in some ways, despite the second movie being none of these things.
People are disagreeing on whether the sound and fury of the movie was the "correct" thing. But there's no denying the difference between the insert song ("Give me wings") and the End of Evangelion insert ("Come, sweet death"). You can see it just from the titles. Eva has grown up, a little.
Here's a translation, just because.
If I could have one wish come true,
I'd like a pair of wings.
On my back, like a bird,
Grant me a pair of white wings.
In the wide sky, I want to spread my wings
and fly away.
Without sadness, I'll let my wings soar,
freely in the sky.
I want to go there.
When I was a child, I had a dream,
And I still have the same dream.
In the wide sky, I want to spread my wings
and fly away.
Without sadness, I'll let my wings soar,
freely in the sky.
(repeat)
I want to go there.
