studiously avoiding my actual point.

Since I seem to be on a Genshiken kick, I just want to point out: while it's still as accurate as ever, as dead-on a comedy of manners as you could wish, the animation in the original series is almost impossible to watch. I don't recommend it. The character designs are weird, the animation is inconsistent (and cheap) and the perspective is often way off. That last one really surprises me -- it's not like perspective's a new thing, and it's not like it's ever been the style to screw it up. Deadlines may have put them under more pressure than I'd guessed. I think there are a lot of series like this -- things that I loved and therefore can never watch again. It's a problem, especially because it's hard to show newer fans these titanic, formative works that defined our entire generation.

I don't know. I have a feeling that Genshiken 2nd is going to be an amazing commercial failure. I'd love to be proved wrong, but I honestly don't think it's going to appeal to the Japanese fans at all. *sigh* And I like Nichijou, too.
