The Evangelion 2.0 trailer came out a few days ago, and promptly got posted on the various video-sharing sites. As you might expect, I've been poring over it to find out what's going to be in the movie.

You've probably seen it by now, but if you haven't:



Frankly, I think it looks amazing, and you would not believe the degree to which I'm looking forward to it. The things that intrigue me most are:

• Who is that in (I suspect) Eva-05? The new girl? Kaworu? KENSUKE?
• Man, they're going through angels fast. I see Zeruel. Also Bardiel and Sahaquiel. I think I also see either Gaghiel or Sandalphon, and possibly Iruel. Also, that shot near the beginning looks at least a little like the targeting on Arael, but I'm probably just imagining that one.
• I don't think we're going to see Leliel, which surprises me. I guess those episodes were kind of introspective, better suited to TV.

But I think that this process of looking for hints is possibly even more fun. I mean, that's what attracted me to Evangelion in the first place: the attraction of digging through this immense architecture of symbols, assigning my own meanings as I went along. People have argued that Eva's symbolism is incoherent -- but to me that's always been the pleasure of it; the fact that it requires so many mental gymnastics to imbue with a unified and consistent meaning -- a meaning which it may not, in fact, contain.
